LiFePO4 vs Lithium-Ion: Why Battery Chemistry Matters More Than Capacity

Two units with the same watt-hour rating can have wildly different lifespans. Here's the one spec worth checking before capacity.

A real example

The Goal Zero Yeti 1000X (lithium-ion, 983Wh) costs about $1,300. The Jackery Explorer 2000 v2 (LiFePO4, 2042Wh) costs $799 — more than double the capacity, better cycle life, for less money. The price gap isn't really about the battery pack's raw materials; it's chemistry plus brand ecosystem.

Rule of thumb: if a spec sheet doesn't explicitly say LiFePO4 (or "LFP"), assume it's the shorter-lived chemistry and ask before buying.

The short version

LiFePO4 outlasts standard lithium-ion by 4-8x in cycle life and is meaningfully safer under heat stress. Check chemistry before capacity — nearly every unit we recommend uses it for exactly this reason.
